What is S.P.A.C.E.?

What I love about the S.P.A.C.E. treatment program, as a parent, is that I do all the work. Often people think that they need to take their child to see someone if they have anxiety. Sometimes this isn't an option! Maybe your child (like mine, who has selective mutism) can't fully engage in therapy sessions. Maybe you have tried getting your child to agree to make changes, but they just can't do it. I can say first-hand that this approach has dramatically helped my daughter (as well as many other families I have supported).

Research shows that the SPACE treatment is as effective as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Through the treatment program, you will help your child by adjusting how you parent specifically for anxiety so that your child can:

  • Develop coping strategies

  • Reduce anxiety

  • Tolerate anxious feelings rather than avoid them

  • Build their self-esteem

  • Develop emotion regulation skills

  • Become more resilient

What happens in SPACE treatment?

The two main changes that parents learn to make in SPACE treatment are to adjust how they respond to their anxious child's anxiety, and to adjust the behaviours they have got stuck in, trying to help their child.

Some of the main anxiety problems treated with SPACE include:

  • Separation anxiety

  • Social anxiety

  • Generalized anxiety

  • Fears and phobias

  • Panic disorder and Agoraphobia

  • Selective mutism

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
